Last day in Denali and homeward bound

When:
June 16, 2012 to June 17, 2012

I'm writing this entry as we fly back to Seattle. Penelope is asleep in Katie's lap, so it is a good time to write. Yesterday was too busy.

Denali National Park - Day 1

When:
June 14, 2012

We woke up this morning, got our RV in order, and then did a 5-mile hike around Byers Lake at the campground we were staying at. It was a pretty good hike, but the mosquitoes were out in force and made some sections miserable. We were hoping to catch a glimpse of the mountains reflected in the lake, but the clouds did not cooperate. However, other than cloudy mountains, the weather was great, which was a welcome change. Along our hike we spotted some loons and a beaver in the lake. We also saw signs of moose and bears along the trail, but luckily we had no encounters.

Hoh Rainforest and Rialto Beach

When:
May 29, 2011

Today (Sunday) we woke up and had breakfast: hot cocoa and oatmeal for us, banana apricot mixed grain jar food for Penelope. Again in shifts. We fixed lunch for ourselves and Penelope, then loaded into the car for the drive to the Hoh Rainforest. We hoped Penelope would sleep the whole way there, but she cried for about 30 minutes while trying to fall asleep. She ended up getting almost an hour nap.

Sol Duc Falls

When:
May 28, 2011

Today was the first day of our very first family camping trip. It has been going great. We woke up at 5:30 AM to start our camping adventure. We had everything ready from the night before, so I loaded up the car. Katie got Penelope ready. Without knowing we wanted to leave early, Penelope woke up at 5:40, which was actually convenient for once. By 6:40, we were in the car and on the road. Penelope seemed to sense that something was going on, but she went with it.

Olympic National Park - May 2011

When:
May 28, 2011 to May 30, 2011

For Memorial Day weekend, Katie and I took Penelope on her first camping trip. We went to Olympic National Park, which we had been wanting to visit for a long time. Camping with a baby definitely takes camping to a whole new level. While we had a lot of fun, it was also a lot of work to keep Penelope safe and entertained. Overall, she seemed to really enjoy herself, although I don't think she really appreciated her surroundings all that much.

Haleakalā National Park

When:
October 26, 2009

Our day started at 3:30AM. We got up early to drive the two hours to the top of Haleakalā Crater, which is just shy of 10,000ft. We got there in time to get a parking spot and a nice place to set up my tripod and camera. It was freezing and windy up there! Daybreak occurred around 6AM, and the sun broke the horizon around 6:25AM. Sunrise was amazing and beautiful. It took many photos, and at least a few of them are really nice (in my opinion). The sun cast a nice deep orange into the crater.
